How to use the Lorem Ipsum generator

What Lorem Ipsum is, and where it comes from
Lorem ipsum is placeholder text used by designers and developers to fill a layout before the real words are ready. It looks like ordinary writing, with words of varied length and sentences of natural rhythm, so it shows how a page will look without the reader being drawn into the meaning.
It is not random gibberish. The standard passage is adapted from De finibus bonorum et malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), a philosophical work written by the Roman statesman Cicero in 45 BC. The opening words come from a sentence about pain, dolorem ipsum, with letters removed and words moved so the Latin no longer makes sense. The text became standard in the printing trade, spread widely on Letraset transfer sheets in the 1960s, and then through desktop publishing software such as Aldus PageMaker.
Why designers use placeholder text

It has limits. Latin letter frequencies differ from English, and real content has headings, numbers and short lines that placeholder text does not. Test with real copy and the longest real content you expect before a design is final, including translated text, which can be 30% longer than English.
Worked example
Ask for 3 paragraphs with the traditional start. The first paragraph begins with the familiar sentence, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua, followed by zero or one random sentence. Paragraphs two and three are fully random, each with 3 to 6 sentences of 7 to 16 words. Expect roughly 80 to 180 words in total, shown beneath the text.
Switch the output to HTML and each paragraph is wrapped in <p>…</p>. Choose List items to get a <ul> with one <li> per sentence, which is handy for mocking up menus and feature lists.
Placeholder text and live websites
Placeholder text belongs in design files and development builds, not on pages that real visitors or search engines see. A published page filled with lorem ipsum offers no value to readers and gives search engines and ad reviewers the impression that the site is unfinished. Before launch, search your site's pages for the words “lorem” and “ipsum” to make sure none were left behind.

Matching the real length matters more than most people expect. A card designed for 20 words of placeholder can break when the real copy runs to 45, and a headline that fits on one line in Latin may wrap to three in German or Urdu. Generate a short, a typical and a long version of each text slot, and make sure the design survives all three.
Accuracy and limits
The generator builds sentences from a built-in list of about 125 Latin-style words using the browser's secure random generator, so the output differs each time and is not meant to be meaningful. It cannot produce text in other languages or scripts. For a layout test in Urdu, Arabic or Hindi, use a real sample in that language, since right-to-left direction and character shapes behave differently.
