The exact factors behind every conversion
Most everyday units are now defined in terms of metric units, so many conversions are exact rather than approximate. These are the definitions the converters use:
| Unit | Equals | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 1 inch | 2.54 cm | Exact (1959 international agreement) |
| 1 foot | 0.3048 m | Exact |
| 1 mile | 1.609344 km | Exact |
| 1 pound | 0.45359237 kg | Exact |
| 1 ounce (avoirdupois) | 28.349523125 g | Exact |
| 1 tola | 11.6638038 g | Defined as 180 grains |
| 1 US gallon | 3.785411784 L | Exact |
| 1 UK (imperial) gallon | 4.54609 L | Exact |
| 1 acre | 4,046.8564224 m² | Exact |
| 1 knot | 1.852 km/h | Exact |
| Kelvin | °C + 273.15 | Exact offset |
Units that change depending on who you ask
Gallons and fluid ounces. A UK gallon is about 20% bigger than a US gallon. The Volume Converter lists them separately so a recipe or fuel figure isn't silently mixed up.
Kilobytes. Storage makers use 1 kB = 1,000 bytes; Windows reports sizes in 1,024-byte units. That is why a "1 TB" drive shows as about 931 GB. The Data Storage Converter shows both systems.
Marla and kanal. One kanal is 20 marla, but the size of a marla depends on the authority: many housing schemes use 225 sq ft, while older revenue records in Punjab use 272.25 sq ft. The Area Converter lets you pick the one your document uses.
