Notes on text tools

How these tools treat your text

Word counts differ between programs because they disagree on edge cases. The Word Counter here treats any run of letters or digits between spaces as one word, so well-known counts once and 2026 counts as a word. A URL or an em dash glued between two words can make the total differ from Word or Google Docs by one or two, which is normal.

Reading time is based on 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed for non-fiction reported in Marc Brysbaert's 2019 review of 190 reading studies. Fiction reads a little faster; technical text slower.

Character limits worth knowing

WhereLimitNote
SMS (Latin letters, GSM-7)160 charsLonger messages are split into parts
SMS with Urdu, Arabic or emoji (UCS-2)70 charsOne emoji switches the whole message to 70
X (Twitter) post, standard account280 charsLinks count as 23
Instagram caption2,200 charsOnly the first lines show before "more"
YouTube video title100 charsSearch results cut it shorter
LinkedIn post3,000 charsAbout 210 show before "see more"

Platforms change these limits from time to time, so treat the table as a starting point and check the app itself before a deadline.

Nothing leaves the page

Every text tool here works on the text inside your browser tab. There is no upload step, so pasting a draft contract or a private message into the Text Diff Checker does not send it to a server.
