The number printed on a Command Strips box — "holds up to 10 lb" — only applies to the surfaces 3M actually tested it on. Put the same strip on wallpaper, brick, or a wall you painted three days ago, and that number stops meaning anything.

Why this holds up
- Command's adhesive is a stretch-release foam strip — it needs full, flat contact with a smooth surface to hit its rated weight.
- The rating is per strip pair, and pairs stack: 4 pairs (8 strips) of Medium strips are rated for up to 10 lb combined, not 10 lb per strip.
- Anything that breaks full contact — texture, wallpaper texture, porous raw wood — drops the real-world hold well below the printed number.

Step 1: Confirm the surface qualifies
Check the surface against the table above. If it's textured, papered, or freshly painted, stop here — pick a different fixing (see our tension-rod and picture-ledge guides) rather than risk the frame.

Step 2: Clean the surface
Wipe the area with rubbing alcohol and let it dry fully. Any dust, oil, or residue reduces adhesive contact.

Step 3: Apply and press
Press each strip pair firmly for 30 seconds, then hold the item in place and press for another 30 seconds. Wait one hour before hanging anything on it.

Styling it in your space
Command strips work best for lightweight framed prints, small mirrors, and gallery-wall pieces where you want a clean, hole-free layout you can rearrange later. For anything over the rated weight, pair strips with a picture ledge instead of pushing past the limit.

Care and maintenance
Re-press strips if a corner starts to lift — that's usually dust or humidity, not a failed strip. In humid bathrooms or kitchens, expect a shorter reliable lifespan and check the hold every few months.
Variations and swaps
- Heavier frames (over 10 lb): switch to our no-stud picture ledge, which distributes weight mechanically instead of adhesively.

- Outdoor use: 3M's Outdoor strips add UV and water resistance (rated -20°F to 125°F) but 3M does not publish a higher weight limit for them over indoor strips of the same size.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reuse a Command strip after removing it?
No — the adhesive is single-use. Stretch-releasing it breaks the bond permanently, so buy replacement strips rather than reapplying old ones.
Do bigger strips always mean more weight?
Within the same product line, yes — Small, Medium, and Large step up in rated weight. But size doesn't overcome a bad surface; a Large strip on wallpaper still isn't rated.
How long should I wait before hanging something after applying strips?
3M recommends waiting at least one hour after pressing strips before hanging your item, and 24 hours before hanging anything at the strip's maximum rated weight.
The surface matters as much as the strip size. Match the two correctly and the printed weight rating is genuinely reliable — mismatch them and no amount of pressing will make up the difference.
